Sea monsters, or the idea of them, have always fascinated me, as have any and all fantastical creatures; maybe this is just because a lot of strange things are wonderful to me. But I think I find fantastical sea creatures most interesting because much of the sea life that humans have discovered to exist already look as if they could be the creatures we depict in our myths and legends (for example, theleafy seadragon is a peculiar and cute example, and just think if it was hundreds of times larger in size). In a way, it’s as if the unreal things we imagine do exist in reality after all.

In continuation of last week’s photo in the Tangential Topics series, I noticed my pattern of portraying supernatural sea creatures these past few weeks, and I guess these beings could be considered monsters to some. It made me think of how folklore often takes one simple thing and amplifies it into something much more than the original inspiration. I think this must have been especially true for sailors who didn’t have cameras out at sea in olden times, encountering bizarre animals they’d never seen before and trying to find a way to describe them when they returned home, and these stories magnifying upon themselves with each telling. In this way, I suppose imagination becomes the vessel for monstrous thoughts.

This is my favorite of all your photographs, it's just so simple and complex at the same time and darkly beautiful.
