The lotus is an important flower in Buddhism, symbolizing purity, rebirth via reincarnation, and divine birth. Because it grows in muddy waters, it is literally perceived to rise and bloom above the murk to achieve enlightenment. If the hearts of beings is seen as akin to an unopened lotus, then the time when the virtues of Buddhism develop within the heart is parallel to what causes the lotus to blossom.
Buddhism is a nontheistic religion based on the teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as the Buddha, which means “the awakened one.” In Buddhism, there is the concept of samsara, which is the continual repetitive cycle of birth and death that arises from ordinary beings’ grasping and fixating on an individual self. Samsara is believed to arise out of avidya, or ignorance, and is characterized by dukkha, otherwise known as suffering, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. Thus, the Buddha’s enlightened teachings are meant to help sentient beings gain insight and end their suffering through the elimination of ignorance, with the ultimate goal to transcend samsara and attain the sublime state of nirvana, the imperturbable stillness of mind and the experience of blissful loss of self due to becoming one with the surrounding world.
This photo is a reflection of personal musings and pensive reactions to pondering these concepts. In the end, it surmises that to transcend this tangible world is to see reality beyond its physical perceptions, to fracture it and reflect upon the refractions found in the slivers in between in order to achieve oneness with the universe.
